These chemical compounds form when organic fuels do not burn completely. They show up in vehicle exhaust, factory smoke, and even the black crust on grilled foods. Once they enter the environment, they do not break down easily.
Instead, they linger in soil and water for a very long time. Animals absorb these chemicals, which then build up inside their fatty tissues. Many of these compounds are toxic and can cause cancer in humans.
For example, a compound called benzo[a]pyrene is a well-known cause of cancer. The unique layout of shared electrons gives these molecules great stability. It also lets them absorb light and glow under ultraviolet lamps.
A common student misconception is that these compounds are only created by human factories. In reality, forest fires and volcanoes produce large amounts of them naturally. Another mistake is thinking that all organic molecules are safe for our bodies.
Because of their flat shapes, these molecules can slide between the steps of our DNA. This shape allows them to disrupt cells and cause harmful mutations.
