Fluorine is highly electronegative, meaning it pulls shared electrons very tightly toward itself. This tight negative shield completely blocks other chemicals from attacking the vulnerable carbon atom. Water and other reactive molecules simply bounce off the tough fluorine outer shell.
Carbon tetrafluoride stays perfectly stable at normal temperatures across the entire Earth’s surface. However, this extreme chemical stability creates a massive problem for our global environment. It acts as a highly potent greenhouse gas that traps excess heat in the atmosphere.
Once released, the tough gas can survive in the air for tens of thousands of years. Its ability to warm the planet is thousands of times worse than normal carbon dioxide. Chemical factories make this gas on purpose by reacting pure fluorine directly with methane gas. The gas also escapes by accident during the high-heat industrial process of making aluminum metal.
