Many students already know about PTFE, which is commonly sold under the brand name Teflon. PTFE is incredibly slick and tough, but it cannot be easily melted into new shapes. Scientists created FEP to solve this exact manufacturing problem while keeping the best chemical traits.
They added bulky side groups along the main carbon chain of the plastic polymer. These bulky groups prevent the long plastic molecules from packing together too tightly. Because the molecules sit farther apart, the plastic melts at a much lower temperature.
Factories can now melt FEP and squirt it into complex molds using standard machines. This process is called injection molding, and it makes mass production much cheaper and faster. Even with this change, FEP still features extremely strong bonds between carbon and fluorine atoms.
These strong bonds mean acids and harsh cleaning solvents cannot break the plastic down. The material also feels very slippery and acts as an excellent electrical insulator. The only real downside is that FEP cannot handle extreme heat quite like PTFE can. FEP safely operates up to 200 degrees Celsius, whereas PTFE survives up to 260 degrees Celsius.
