Organic chemistry deals with countless different molecules made mostly of carbon and hydrogen. Studying every single molecule one by one would be an impossible task for students. Luckily, certain small groups of atoms appear over and over again in different chemicals.
Chemists refer to these highly predictable clusters of atoms as functional groups. If two totally different molecules have the same functional group, they will react similarly. Imagine a tiny molecule with two carbons and a giant molecule with twenty carbons.
If both molecules contain an alcohol group, they will share very similar chemical reactions. Because of this helpful pattern, chemists classify molecules into predictable families based on functional groups. These families include alcohols, amines, ketones, and carboxylic acids that all share similar chemical traits.
This logical system also controls how scientists name organic chemicals all around the world. The highest-priority functional group in a molecule decides the specific ending of its official name. For example, a ketone gets an -one suffix, while a carboxylic acid gets an -oic acid suffix.
Many complex biological molecules contain several different functional groups at the exact same time. These complicated chemicals are known in the scientific community as polyfunctional molecules. Each separate group usually minds its own business and reacts independently of the others.
