Hafnium shares nearly identical chemical properties with zirconium because their atoms are almost the same size. This similarity makes it very difficult for factories to separate the two elements. Hafnium always hides in small amounts inside zirconium minerals like zircon.
You will never find pure hafnium sitting alone in nature. When exposed to air, the metal quickly forms a thin, tough oxide layer on its surface. This passive layer protects the metal from being eaten away by strong acids or bases.
However, hydrofluoric acid is a dangerous exception that easily dissolves the metal. Hafnium typically forms stable compounds where it has a +4 oxidation state. This means it shares four valence electrons when it bonds with other elements.
A common student misconception is that hafnium and zirconium behave the same way under nuclear radiation. In reality, these two metals behave in opposite ways when hit by neutrons. Hafnium is a powerful neutron sponge that easily absorbs neutrons inside a reactor.
Zirconium lets neutrons pass right through its structure without capturing them. This contrast makes them useful for different parts of nuclear power plants. Hafnium compounds are also used to make modern computer chips.
