An immersion lens is a special microscope objective used for high-resolution imaging. It requires a thin layer of oil or liquid between the lens and the specimen. This liquid layer raises the numerical aperture and greatly improves the resolving power.

When light leaves a glass slide and enters air, it bends very sharply. This happens because air has a much lower refractive index than solid glass. Many useful light rays bend so much that they miss the microscope lens entirely.

An immersion lens solves this problem by filling that air gap with oil. Chemists formulate immersion oil to match the refractive index of the glass slide. Because the oil and glass match, the light passes through without bending away.

This allows the microscope objective to collect much wider and steeper light rays. Collecting more light raises a property called the numerical aperture of the lens. A higher numerical aperture directly increases the resolving power of the entire microscope.

This means you can easily distinguish two tiny objects that sit very close together. Students often forget to clean the sticky oil off the lens after using it. Leaving the oil on the lens can permanently damage the expensive optical coatings.
