To build this formula, chemists look at the balanced chemical equation. They place the concentrations of the products on the top of a fraction. The concentrations of the reactants go on the bottom of the fraction.
Each concentration is raised to a power matching its number in the equation. This power matches the coefficient sitting in front of each chemical substance. When a reaction reaches a steady state, the forward and reverse speeds match.
At this point, the reaction is completely balanced and reaches chemical equilibrium. The math formula now gives a special fixed number called the equilibrium constant. Scientists write this final constant value as the letter K. Before the system reaches this final state, the formula gives a different number.
Chemists call this current working value the reaction quotient, or Q. Chemists compare Q to K to predict what the reaction will do next. If Q is smaller than K, the reaction moves forward to make products. If Q is larger than K, the reaction runs backward to make reactants.
Many students confuse these two related concepts during their chemistry tests. Just remember that K is the final goal and Q is the current score. This math helps chemical engineers design better factories for plastics and medicines.
