Microporous carbon is a special type of solid carbon filled with microscopic holes. These tiny holes are strictly less than two nanometers wide across. The massive number of pores gives the material a huge internal surface area.

Factories make this material by heating wood or coal to very high temperatures. They add special chemicals or gases that eat away parts of the carbon. This process creates a complex maze of tiny tunnels deep inside the solid.
