You create chemical mixtures every time you stir different things together in a beaker. You can mix raw elements with other elements or combine complex compounds. The amounts do not have to follow a strict or fixed recipe.
You can add a little bit or a lot of any single ingredient. Chemists divide all mixtures into two main categories based on how they look. Homogeneous mixtures look completely uniform and consistent throughout the entire sample.
We often refer to these perfectly blended types of mixtures as solutions. Heterogeneous mixtures look uneven and have visibly separate chunks or layers. Because the mixed ingredients never actually bond together, they are fairly easy to separate.
Students often confuse physical mixtures with true chemical compounds formed by intense reactions. Compounds lock atoms together in exact chemical ratios that you cannot easily break. In a simple mixture, you can always recover the original pure ingredients.
You just need to use simple physical lab methods like filtering or boiling. A technique called chromatography can also slowly sort out the separate parts.
