In a normal room, gas molecules constantly collide with every surface around us. If we clean a metal surface, it gets covered in gas molecules in less than a microsecond. In a UHV chamber, the pressure is so low that a clean surface stays clean for many hours.
Under these conditions, the average distance a gas molecule travels before hitting another molecule is very long. This distance is called the mean free path, and it can reach tens of kilometers. To reach UHV, scientists cannot just use a simple pump.
They must use several different pumps in a specific order. First, rough pumps lower the pressure, and then special high-vacuum pumps take over. The metal chamber must also be heated to over one hundred degrees Celsius for several days.
This process is called baking, and it drives off water molecules stuck to the chamber walls. Without this baking step, water would slowly evaporate and prevent the chamber from reaching the target pressure. Even a tiny fingerprint inside the chamber can ruin the vacuum because the oils slowly release gas molecules.
