These molecules contain only strong single bonds without any reactive functional groups. The bonds between the carbon and hydrogen atoms share their electrons very equally. This equal sharing means the overall molecule has no positive or negative poles.
This uniform structure makes alkanes remarkably stable and difficult to break apart. They do not easily react with strong acids or harsh chemical bases. Many students wrongly assume that their chemical stability makes them completely useless.
In reality, their main chemical reaction is combustion, which means burning in oxygen. This violent burning process releases massive amounts of trapped heat and light energy. The modern world relies completely on burning alkanes to power cars and heat homes.
